L'Unione Cooperativa allora fiorente a Milano mise il lutto a tutte le sue sedi e pubblicò un opuscolo, con ritratto, In memoria di Q. ff. Holyoake.l) Ai cooperatori di Milano aveva detto: Può darsi che io più non vi veda, ma ancbe in punto di morte il mio cuore sarà con l'Italia . E volle infatti che la sua bara fosse avvolta dalle due bandiere garibaldine venute in suo possesso e da lui religiosamente conservate come simbolo di uno dei più cari ideali vagheggiati nella lunga esistenza.

Dear Sir, the letter you gave to M. Watson is in the hands of James Stansfeld and fairly copied, I suppose. I writed the one I enclose, authorising yon to publish it, if you seem it convenient in the Reasoner.
You will find a mark to a passage. Perhaps, you could usefully quote in an
editorìa! note the fact of one of our men having been recently arrested at Ravenna,
given up to four Austrian soldiers and a caporal, and saie with the soldiers in a
foreign land. The four happened to he Hungarians and one man persuaded them
to run away with him. There was an immense display of forces to arrest them.
Patrols and cavalry were sent on ali the roads, and the forestpine od Ravenna the
one sung by Byron in his Don Juan has been surrounded by 3000 men. But
they are safe now and most likely the Hungarians will come to England. Stili, the
escape, in the midst of enemies has costed a great deal of money. With money many
man could be safed.

Sir, yon have inserted in your columns a long violent article against me, front some leaders of socialistic French sects. I appeal to your loyalty for the full insertion of my own article, which has hitherto appeared in the Leader only in a mutilated form.
From yon, Sir, I ask nothing but fairplay, trusting for the rest the sound judgement of your honest liberalminded readers. To the politicai attack, I shall be contented to answer with the unmutilated docnment; to the personal one with contempt.
