My dear Mr Holyoake, I have read the English translation of Faith and the Future and I have come to the conclusion that it would he worse than nseless, dama-ging, I shall not say you and me, but what good we intend to the cause from the pnblication. The first half of the hook, written under temporary Continental circ um-Btances, would prove really inintelligible now to your english public and prevent them fxom going to the second. You know that I care but little about myself opinion or reputation, so that you may be fully convinced that if I dissuade you from publishing, I have reasons belonging entirely to the aim we pursue.
But I venture to suggest a different pian. It will involve a delay of some three months; but it may lead to some real good. I think that a volume could be published, more complete and thicker than what that would be, composed of long extraits the half of Faith and Future would be comprised from the many different writmgs, I have published, touching politicai, social, religious topics, so as to give what in the XYIIIthey were calling: the spirit of... it would be thoughts, or any other word you would like, of Mazzini. A certain, though not an ab solute order, could be put in the selectìon . A preface would complete them.
Does this seem likely to be useful? If so, you have only to teli me; and I shall manage.
Ever yours faithfully
Joseph Mazzini.

Dear Mr Holyoake, there will appear, to morrow perhaps, either in the Daily News or in the Morning Advertiser a letter of mine on the war. It strikes me that the repubHcation of this one together with the first addressed to the Friends of Italy, in a popular form, for one penny, if possible, would not cause a loss, and would perhaps do some good. If you are of the same opinion might you not do it? I shouid like to be read by the working classes. I may fail in expressing my thought but I feci convinced they are grounded on truth.
The paper I awaited for has reached London and I hope I shall be able within a few days to hand over to you some fragments on Publicity in International affairs .
Yours faithfully .. .
Joseph Mazzini.
