no injury or ili-treatment on account of bis txansactions with the Italian Government ,l) Era qualcosa, ma non era quello che poteva essere accettato dal nostro Governo. Però implicava l'inizio di discussioni ed accomodamenti, che alla fine avrebbero condotto alla desiderata soluzione.
Il 9 gennaio 1882 il Mancini inviava al suo Ambasciatore in Londra un telegramma, in cui, incaricandolo di ringraziare il Gladstone ed il Granville per l'energia con la quale si erano messi nel sostenere gli interessi d'Italia, lo invitava a presentar loro l'articolo addizionale per Raheita, si come egli credeva doversi formulare.
Le gouvernement italien reconnait, en ce qui le concerne, la souve-raineté de la Sublime Porte et de l'Bgypte sur le reste della cote occi­dentale de la Mer Rouge au sud aussi bien qu'au nord d'Àssab, avec eette, réserve cependant, que cette reconnaissance ne doit pas avoir pour effet de modifier ou de troubler, en quoique ce soit, les conditions actuelles du Sultan de Raheita. Le Gouvernement italien s'engage en outre à ne pas étendre les présentes limites du territoire d'Assab, telles qu'elles sont indiquées ci dessus à Particle premier.2*
Esso fu comunicato al Granville il 10 gennaio. Egli ne fece immediata parola con il Ministero delle Indie, e dallo studio di questo dicastero, usci una formula dell'articolo, come si credeva opportuna dalle autorità inglesi.
La prima, che si riaccostava al concetto espresso dal Granville al Menabrea, il 7 gennaio 1882 diceva:
The Italian Government recognizes, so far as it is concerned, the sovereignty of the Porte over the remainder of the "western coast of the Red Sea to the south as well as to north of Àssab and engages not to pass the present limits of the territory of Àssab indicateci in Artide 1 . The Egyptian Government, on its part, undertakes that the Sheikh Borhan of Raheita shall not he in any way molested on account of bis transactions, belonging to the past, with the Ruhattino Company and the Italian Government, in respect to Assab.
