Marsh, who bandlod the affair hereafter. was apparently unirapressed by Garibaldi's dcfense of his claims to citizenship reported in this letter. In the succeeding weeks the general made sevcral appeals, as an American citizen, through the United States consul at Spezia for an American vessel to take him back to his home on Caprera, and the appeals were varmly suppor-ted by both American and Italian friends of the general. Marsh declined to act on the requests and formally refused to recognize Garibaldi citizenship.
