W. L. Pattersoa a John M. Daniel
Genoa, Àugust 24, 1860.*)
Sir: Your note ofthe 21st informing me of the promise of the Government as to my complaints has been received.
To the extract from the note of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, contained in yours wiihout comment, I hardly knoto how to reply.
That any supposed interest of mine in GaribaldVs expedidons could have embarrassed the Questore and caused him tofail in having mode at my repeated requests the arrest of the deserters is simply absurd. On the contrary the oppo-site effect might have been expected.
If you substitute the voords Le Gouvernment de Sa Majesté à Twin for M. le Consul des Etals Unis oVAmérique, in the extract, you will find the attempt of the Minister to account for the Questoré's conduct to become quite rational.
The extract seems to amount to a counter complaint against me. Saying nothing as to the grace toith which this comes from the Government at Twin; as I ani ignorant in what manner I have interested myself in these expeditìons to warrant any complaint, I have nothing to reply except a general denial of any intention at any timo of giving offence to the Sardinian Government or of having done anything contrary to the duty I ovoe my own.
John M. Daniel a Lewis Casa
Turin, August 28, 1860. No. CLXIIIV
Sir: [Informa il Cass della corrispondenza col Cavour e col Console americano a Genova circa le diserzioni di marinai americani per arruolarsi nel" l'esercito di Garibaldi in Sicilia}... It does not however seem to me toorthy of further notice in my correspondence toith the Sardinian Government. The essential thing is to remove just ground of complaint from our commerce.
