Sir:... It is not positively certain that orders have been issued for the reti' rement of the French fieet from Gaeta. We may consequenUy conclude that the combined land and sea forces of Victor Emmanuel will soon relieve Italy from that obstacle to its tranquillization. The Emperor Napoleon has not been able to furnish to the satisfaction of Franco any adequate reasonsfor this act of intervention, and the belief that he contemplated some result injurious to Italian unity has acquired a stronghold upon the public mind. The officiai explanation in the Moniteur is very feeble and inconclusive.
Much interest is felt in the result of the elections to the Italian Parliament, which are to come off on the 27th of the present month, If Count Cavour shall be sustained by the retums, and very little doubt is entertained of his triumph, it will at once relieve the Venetian question of much of the immediate danger which noto surrounds it. That cautious and sagacious statesman will not hazard the fate of Italy, and thepeace of Europe by an illadvised and precipi­tate attack upon the present territorial possessions of Austria...

Unisco questa mia lettera del vostro amico Meucci4) onde felicitarlo a nome di tutti gli amici Italiani e Americani delle continue vittorie da Lei e dai suoi bravi compagni riportate sui nemici d'Italia d'aver liberato la cara patria e innalzato il nome Italiano fra le Nazioni del Mondo, Noi che da tanti anni viviamo in terra straniera che più. ogni altro possiamo apprezzarne il merito,
I miei voti i più fervidi sono sempre che ella possa riuscire in tutto ciò che desidera e intraprende, ben certo che sarà sempre a eterna gloria del nome italiano e vantaggioso per la patria.
Spero quest'anno aver il piacere di rivederla frattanto la prego di accettare i miei saluti come pure quelli di mio socio Leoni e mi creda
