Aprii, 5, 1861. V
My dear Sir: To us Americans the name of Gen. Garibaldi has become, almost as dear as that ofour illustrious Washington whose noble andphilanthro-pic acts gave to him the name of the Father of His Country, as to the noble Garibaldi we ali look as the great expounder and defender of that Liberty which places the inhabitants ofthe Italian States on a par with us ofthe United States.
Regarding your acts as we do in this country it is noi at ali surprising that we long and wìsh for something from that distinguished one whose name and fame is upon every tongue, and being my self equa lly anxious for something to perpetuate the memory of Garibaldi take this liberty of writing to you and asking for your name, your autograph in any shape orform you may be pleased to givo me the some.
Henry H. Barstow a George Perkins Marsh
Palermo, July 29, 1861. 2)
Sir: I have the honour to inform you that having lately returned from a tour to Naples and Rome, a journal ofthis not long established (Yèar 1, No. 51) catted the Unità Politica, ofvery ultra principles, under date ofthe 23rd publish-ed an article, the originai and translation of which I enclose (No. 2) scanda-lously misrepresenting my motives and actions.
When this Article was brought to my knowledge some days after, I at first ihought it best (considering the standing of the journal) to take no notice of the matter, but offurther reflection, I considered it my duty to see His Excellency the Viceroy, and to complain of the gross calumny therein contained. I there-fore called upon him yesterday for that purpose.
His Excellency informed me that he had, as soon as he heard ofthe matter, written to the Government at Turin to cali your attention to the subject (a copy of which letter he showed me, as it also mentioned the report that I had had an interview with the exKing of Naples) he at the some Urne advised me to com-manicate with you at once: I have therefore addressed to you this Despatch to bring the circumstances spoken of in the above mentioned journal to your knowledge.
