Upon a suggcstion front the floor, Professor Clougb then appointed a nominating commìttee composed of Professore Gordon A. Craig, II. Stuart Ungimi), Felix Gilbert, Mary Lucilie Shny, and Lynn Case io submit recommendations fur a President and un Executive Secretary-Treasurer, cach to serve a two-year terni. This commìttee, which mei immediately following the general meeting; submitted the following recommendations: For President - Professor KENT ROHEHTS GKKENFIEED or Professor A. WILLIAM SALOMONE. For Executive Secretary-Treasurer Howard R. Marraro.

Election: On January 5, 1956, as Secretary prò tempore, I mai leti a ballot to each member witb the request that it be returned by January 19, along with the 4.00 annua! tuenibcrsbip dues. On January 26, I announeed lo oli those who bad signined their iniention to join the American Division, that Professor Kent Roberts Grecnfiebl had becn' electcd President and that as the sole candidate for the office of Executive Secretary-Treasurer I was elected to that office.
Àdvisory Commìttee: Soon after bis election to office, President Greenhchl appointed an Àdvisory Comniittec of four merabers, each to serve a varying period of time, as follows: H. Stuart Hughes (1957), Donald McKay (1958), A. William Salomone (1959), Shcpard B. Cimigli (1960).
Membership: At prescnt ihere are 71 regolar paid memhers of the American Division. The dues bave been deposited with the Bursar of Columbia University in a special account which bears the name of our Division. According to arran-gements made with Professor Alberto Maria Ghisalberti, the President of the National Inslitutc in Rome, wn are required to pay the National Institute 1,600 lire or 2.56 for each member. This is to defray the expenses for the Rassegna which each member reccives directly from Rome and for other benefits. We now bave on deposit with the Columbia Bursar the som of 101.00.
Assistance from Columbia Universityt In connection with hnanc.es, it is a pleasure to express our gratcful thanks and appreciation to Professor Shepard B. Clougb who, as Director of the Casa Italiana, defrayed ali the expenses the Ame­rican Division im-urred in connection with mailing, postage, and secretoria! assi­stance. Professor Clougb continued this assistance to February 28, 1956. Since then, the expenses for postage have been paid for personally by the Executive Secretary-Treasurer and the clerical help bas been supplied by the School of Cenerai Studics of Columbia University and by student voluntcers.
Activities 1956: Two import ani functions werc held during the Spring of the year. Under the joint auspices of the Casa Italiana, the America Italy Society, and the American Division of the -Istituto, on Aprii 18, 1956, Count Lnigi Ferraris delivered a lectnre on " Massimo d'Azeglio : statesman, aitisi and litterateur " in the Auditorium of Columbia's Casa Italiana. Count Ferraris, who was on a visit to the United States, had been introducivi to me by Professor Ghisalberti who also suggested the desirabillty of inviting Count Ferraris to dcliver a lecturc under our auspices. The lecturc was wcll attended; severa1 memhers of the American Division werc presenti!
On May 20, 1956, the President or the Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the American Division was officialty invited to dcliver a bricf address at the rede-djeutìon and inanguralion of the Garibaldi-Meucci Mcmorial Muscum in Staten Island. Although President Grceufield come purposely to New York from Washin­gton io attend the ceremony, in bis customary inodesty, he insisted upon my arrepting the invitatimi to dcliver the three or four minuted address.
