Vita dell'Istituto

NEW YORK.
St. Louis Meeting : At the first Annual Meeting of the American Division held last year (1956) in St. Louis, Missouri, two outstanding papere were read one by Professor Salomone and the other by Professor Hughes. In additimi to a fair representation front our American Division, the meeting, held under the chair-manship of Professor Howard M. Ehrmann, was also attended by many membera of the American Historical Association. In the absence of a large attendance by members of our American Division, no decisions were taken at the business meeting. It was felt that since the 1957 Meeting was scheduled for New York, the presence of many more members would enable us to take action in the several matterà that will be discuBsed later today.
In the absence of President Greenfield, who was not able to attend because of illness, Professor H. Stuart Hughes, on my invitation, graciously accepted the chairmanship for ibis Second Annual Meeting (1957).
Membershipi I am glad to be able to report that the membership in the American Division has increased from seventy-one to seventy-eight.
The following three colleagues and friends failed to renew their membership: Dr. Giuseppe Ali; Professor Felix Gilbert; Professor Edward R. Tannenbaum.
The tea new members whom we are pleased to welcome in our midst are: Dr. Remo Romolo Cernili ; Dr. Fausto Cleva ; Dr. Nicholas Y. De Leo ; Dr. Joseph J. Doltolo; Mr. A. Ferdinand Engel; Professor Norman Kogan; Dr. Nicholas R. Lo Cascio; Dr. Louis J. Padula; Professor Andrew F. Rolle; Professor Edgar R. Rosen.
It will be an immense help to the American Division if each member would make a real effort to recommend at least one new member for the coming year.
Finance: In order to simplify and centraline the bookkeeping of the American Division, the following procedure has been adopted. The full amount of the membership dnes.is deposited in a special account kepi by the Controller of Columbia University. Of the four dollars paid by each member, the Controller is authorized to send 2.56 to the headquarters of the Istituto in Rome, in accordance with the arrangements made with the President of the Istituto (Professor Ghisal berli). The balance of 1-44 remains on deposit with the Controller of Columbia. Since the American Division has had no expenscs of any kind, the total deposit to our credit, AB shown in the last monthly statement received from the Controller, is 211.00. A part of the clerica! servicoB has been performed by my Secretary in the Sehool of General Stodies, and by volnntcer student workers free of charge.
