Advisory Council. The Committee consisted of Professor Lynn M. Case (Chairman), Professor George A. Carbone, and Professor R. John Rath. The nomination Wffl be annonnced by the Chairman at today's meeting.
Prhe: A gifi from the Cultural Office of the Italian Embassy in the United States has raade it possible for the American Divìsion to offer a prize of 200.00 for the best unpublishcd stndy in the history of modem Italy, of articìe or essay length. The tertns and conditions of the award were detenni ned by President Greenfield in consultalion with the four members of the Advisory Council and the Executive Secretary-Treasum-. A mimeographed announcement of the prize wus sent to the major historical revicws in ibis country, to Italica, to the Italian Quartely, to executive officerà of history departments in selected American uni-versities, and to each of our members. Manuscripts should be in hands of the Executive Secretary-Treasurer no later than June 1, 1958. It is intended to make the award at our Deeember 1958 meeting. Except for one or two inquiries from members, no manuscripts bave as yet been received.
Lecture by His Excellency, Ambassador Vitetli: On May 3, 1957, in the Audi­torium of the Casa Italiana of Columbia University, His Excellency, Ambassador Leonardo Vi tetti, the Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations, delivered a lecture on Diplomatic Methods in the Modera World under the joint auspices of the American Division and of the Casa Italiana. The scholarly and instructive lecture was attended by several members of our Division. A recep­tion in the Salone of the Casa Italiana following the lecture gave our members an opportunity to meet with the lecturer.
Garibaldi and Cavour Manuscripts: The Chairmen of two national commissiona for the collection, editing and publication of definitive editions respectìvely of the correspondence of Camillo Benso di Cavour and of Giuseppe Garibaldi bave invited the Executive Secretary-Treasurer to assist thein in locating manuscripts in American libraries and archives. Accordingly, a letter was sent to the major national and state archives and libraries, the major hi stori cai and literary review and newspapers. The docnments found were photostated and sent respectìvely to Professor Ghisalberti or to Professor Maturi in Turin.
Salvemini Bibliographyi The Società Toscana per la Storia del Risorgimento [s planning lo issue a special edition of its Rassegna Storica Toscana in honor of the late Gaetano Salvemini. Dr. Sergio Canterani, the Director of the Archivio di Stato of Florence and editor of the review informed the Executive Secretary that in this issue of the review the editoria! board wished to include a bibliograpby of Professor Salveraini's writings in the United States. To assist Dr. Canterani, the Executive Secretary invited one of his graduate stndents (Dr. Bianche Joffe) to compile the bibliograpby which has already been sent to the editor.
National Congress ai Salerno'. The 36tb Congress of the Istituto was held at Salerno from October 19ih to 22nd, 1957. At the suggestion of Professor Ghisal­berti. the Executive Secretary appointed Professor Norman Kogan, of the Depert* ment of Government and International Relations of the University of Connecticut, v/ho happened to have been in Italy at the time, to be the officiai representative of the American Division. At the meeting Professor Kogan presented the greetings of our Divisimi and describcd briefly the program of our Second Annual Meeting,
The schedule of future Congresscs of the National Institute is as follows: Bari (1958), Milan (1959), Palermo, Naplea (1960), and Turin (1961). These last three Congresses will celebrale the three centenarie of Italian unity.
Relation with the Istituto in Rome: As a result of a series of resolutlons adopted by the National Advisory Council of the Istituto in Rome, the Executive Secretary has been officfally informed by Miss Marcella Medina, the Amministra* tore of the Istituto, later confirmed by Professor Ghisalberti, that begìnning with 1958, the regular due* for members residui g outside Italy have been raised to
