NEW YORK. - Society for Italian Historical Studies 1964 Business Meeting. The Business Meeting of the Society for Italian Historical Studies was held on Tuesday, Decomber 29, 1964, at the Sheraton Park Hotel in Washinghton, D. C. in conjnnction with the meeting of the American Historical Associatìon.
In the absence of Professor S. William Halperin, the President, who is absent on leave in Europe, the meeting was called to order at 5:45 p. m. by Dr. Kent Roberta Grecn-field, who acted as Chairman. The Annua! Report of the Executive SecretaryTreasurer (Professor Marraro) was accepted as read with the exception that he was ordered to strike out the word " entirely in the second paragraph of page 6.
Dr. Greenficld stated that the Report of the Executive Secretary called for two separate resolntìons: the first, unanimously approved, expressed the deep gratitude and appreciation of the Society to the School of General Studies of Columbia University for the valuable snpport given to the Society sirice its establislunent in 1955; the second resolution, also unanimously approved, expressed the Society'a appreciation to Mrs. Sylvia Bassoff, Professor Marraro's secretary, for ali the fine assistance she has rendered to the Society in the conduct of the Society'a work. The Executive Secretary was autho-rized to communicate the first resolution to Dean Clarence Walton, Dean of the Schooì of General Studies, and the second to Mrs. Bassoff, directly.
Following a discussion on the question as to whether the Society should contìnue the issuance of another News Lettor, the conscnsua of opinion was that the News Letter is valuable to the members and that the next issue should wait until Professor Norman Kogan's return from Italy. It was the unanimous opinion of the members to consnlt with Professor Kogan and postpone the issuance of the News Letter to September 1965 so as to give Professor Kogan time to collect and edit material to be included.
The question of the principles that should govern the awarding of the Citation carne under discussion. Professor Lopez, the Chairman of the 1964 Prizc and Citation Committee, had submitted two questions for consideration and approvai at this meeting: First, the Society should henceforth award the Citation not for a single work, bnt fot the entìre activity of a stili active scholar; Second, no scholar should be eligihle for the Citation whìlc he is serving on the Committee.
A long discussion developed on the first question. Professor Powell then moved that in the future the Prize and Citation Committee award the Society'a Citation to an establiahed and distinguished scholar in recognition boti of bis recent published work or worlcs and for bis contributìon to Italian bistory throughout bis career. It was also moved that no scholar should be given the Citation il' he has been previously cited. The motìon was cazried unanimously.
When deeiding on a citation (or citations) for 1965, the Chairman, K. R. Greenfield, '.vii! ask the Committee to be guided by the following recommendations that Robert Lopez, the 1964 Chairman, and others, ha ve madc: 1, The citation may he for a congni-cuously important artici e as well as for a hook. 2. A sperine rocent publication should provide the " hook,, on whlch to bang a citation. But, as in the case of Kristeller this year, the Committee wili take into account the wholo of the author*B work, as appraised by the roember of the Committee who is qualified to pass judgement on its qnafity. 3. The date of publication should fall within the two years precoding the date of award
