dcsircd rcsnlts. A Constant, effort must be made to increase our membersbip. If the Society is to grow in sirength and in numbersi as 1 fcrvently hopeit will it will nced the heip and support of ali its members. The Executive Secretary-Trcasurer rcports with deep sorrow the death of Dr. Constanti.no E. McGuire who joined our Society in 1962.
It is with satisfaction that I report that thirteeu members are subscribed to two reviews and two others to font reviews. Three members are not subscribed to any review but, pay a nominai foe to be kept on our membersbip list. The total uumber of siibsctip-tions in 1965 amount to 153, or a gain of 13 over that of 1964. The following tuhle clearly shows the nunibcr of subscriptions to each of the reviews to wbich our members bave subscribed each year from 1959 to 1965. Severa! members, in reply to my suggestion bist year, submitted the titles of other reviews wbich they would like to see added to our list. Howcvcr, since there was only a limited interest in any one review, it did not seem advi-sablc to contact the publishers to incroire on wbat terms and conditions they were willing to ofifer the review to our members. It hns not scemed worthwhile to add other reviews to those alrcady on the list if only one or two members bave expresscd an interest. This pòliey was particularly important tbis year since the Executive SecretaryTreasnrer has had considerable tronble with several of the publishers who found ìt necessary to increase the subscrip tion xatcs, but who failcd to notify him of the increase until after the members had sent in their subscriptions in accordance with the old rates. Tbis failure on the part of the publishers occasioned a considerable amount of correspondence between them and the Executive SecretaryTreasurer and between him and some of the members who complained that they were not receiving the reviews for which they had subscribed. "While admitting that they had failed to notìfy me of the increase, the publishers argned ratber childishly that they had indeed notinoti the individuai members. In any case, the controversy ended happily when the publishers finally agreed to accept the old rates for tbis year also, but that the increase will apply for the 1966 subscriptions. Members will note, I hope without too much alarm, that ncarly ali publishers bave increascd the subscrip tion rates. After ali, Italian publishers also bave a right to me et costs! The Society's Newsletter, again edited hy Professor Norman Kogan, but distribnted through my office, was mailed to the members in the month of October. The delay was partially due to the late return of Professor Kogan from Italy and to the pressure of other urgent work assigned to my Secretary, Mrs. Sylvia Bassoff.
Essay Contest: Tbis year's (1965) Prize Essay Contest was again made possible by the generosity and interest of Dr. Giuseppe Card ilio, the Director of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura. In the early fall, our activc and energetic Chairman of the Prize Essay and Citatioi! Committee, Dr. Kent Roberta Greenfield, became sick and on the advice of bis doctors, was forced to suspend ali activities. In the emergency, I invited Professor Catherine Boyd to assume the dutics and responsibilities of Ghaicman of tbis important committee. Tbis she has carried out with ber usuai and customary effectiveness. The winner of tbis year's cash Prize and the winner of the Society's Cita tion will be announced by ber at tbis meeting. It give me pleasure to annonnee that the America Italy Society has again donated the sum of 200.00 for our Society's 1966 Cash Prize. In a letter, dated Novcmbcr 12, 1965, Mrs. Hedy Giustì-Lanham, the Executive Director of the Àmerica-I taly Society, stateci that ber Society will indeed be happy to donate the 200 in 1966 for the Prize of the Society for Italian Historical Studies, particularly this year, as a personal tributi* to you . Ou beimi f of the cntirc membersbip of our Society and in a very special way on my own behali', I wish to express our deep appreoiation to the officerà of the America Italy Society for their generosity which has made it possible for our Society to carry out tbia useful actìvity. Mrs. Hedy Giusti-Lanham has been most cooperative in ber support of oor Society's Prize Essay Contest.
