Come si vede, il Trevelyan non era affatto incapace di riconoscere i suoi errori, ma ciò non bastava a giustificarli; in realtà noi crediamo che, al di là delle passioni giovanili, all'Inglese qualche volta il giudizio morale ur­geva troppo dal di dentro per non accavallarsi a quello storico e con esso confondersi.
Questa è la caratteristica anche del secondo volume su Garibaldi, che è poi, forse, il migliore dei tre, quello cioè ove l'autore è meglio riu­scito a cogliere il significato di una spedizione nata dal popolo e da esso realizzata. Ci è già capitato di dire che il Garibaldi di Trevelyan è l'eroe in cui si ritrovano le virtù di tutto un popolo; Trevelyan crede nel singolo, ma crede pure in una continuità spirituale e non in un antagonismo tra l'individuo e la massa. Perciò la trilogia garibaldina non si riduce ad es­sere una biografia, ma è piuttosto una visione d'insieme che osserva tutto il Risorgimento e lo rappresenta non come una conquista regia, ma nean­che come una lotta antimonarchica, visto che è possibile giungere all'unità solo attraverso il rapporto dialettico instauratosi tra forze moderate e forze democratiche: Cavour è la tesi, Mazzini l'antitesi e Garibaldi fa da sintesi ideale tra i due, e in tanto si può parlare di unità in quanto mai, come nel 1860, si è avuta unità d'azione e di fini a guidare l'opera di uomini cosi diversi tra loro (in ciò il Trevelyan pecca di ottimismo). C'è gloria per tutti: The expedition of Garibaldi ... was not the work of one party but of ali the elemenls of Italian patriotism. Mazzini and bis friends instigated the expedition; Garibaldi and his followers accomplished it; the King and Cavour allowed it to start... and gave it the support and the guidance without which it must inevitably had failed midway .8)
