The Animai Meeting of the Society for Italian Historical Studies was called to order al 5:50 p.m Decemher 28, 1968 in the Hartford Room of the Statler-Hilton Hotel, New York City. Ahout forty-fivc inembers werc present.
Pre s idcnt Charles F. Delzell made several annoti ne emenl.s concernine the papers on Italian history heing presented at the American Historical Associalion.
The Secrelary-Treasnrer made bis report on the raembership and fìnuuces of the Society. On Decomber 28, 1968 there was 1,985.03 in the Savings Account of the Society and 943.96 in the Checking Account. In 1968 the Society had 144 members. The report was accepted as read.
Emiliana P. Noether reported for the Awards and Citation Committee. The 200.000 prize for the best unpublished essay or disserta ti on in the field of Italian history hy a young scholar was awarded to Howard J. Burgwin, Jr. for his doctoral dissertalion, "Continuitv Versus Cfaange in Italian Policy Toward Franca: 1932-36.*' The prize money was made availuble to our Society by a generous gift from the America-Italy Society, through the good offices of its Executive Director Hedy Giusti-Lanliam. Mrs. Noether tben read the following Citation for Distinguished Achievement in bonor of Shepard B. Clough:
"The Society for Italian Historical Studies conferà its Citation for Distinguished Achievement to SHEPARD BANOROFT CLOUGH in recognitión of his pioneer work in arousing interest in the United States In the history of modera Italy. Through his teaching and writJng he laid the foundations for Italian historical studies in tliis country and encouraged and stimulated the development of further research in what was ' terra incognita ' for most American students. His work on Italian economie history has brought bini recognitión among botb hislorians and economiste. As visìting professor on numerous occasions at Italian universities he has forged inteUectual links between Italian and American scholars which bave helped ali of us who share bis commitment to an enthusiasm for Italian history."
Duane Koenig reported for the Nominating Committee. He nominateli John Thaycr to the Advisory Co.uncil to replace John M. Cammett whose term expired. Mr. Thayer was elected nnanimously.
Shepard B. Clough and Edward R. Tannenbaum hriefly described the proposed national symposium on modera Italy to be held in the Fall of 1969. It is being sponsored by the Colombia University Seminar on Modera Italy. They asked that the Society for Italian Historical Studies serve as a co-sponsor. It was 60 moved, seconded, and approved. The planning committee of tbe symposium will be broadened to include represenlalives of our Society.
A discussion ensued, Ied by Frederic C. Lane, of the prospect that the American Historical Associalion might eliminate the specialized historical sessions sponsored by affiliated historical societies from its animai program. Mr. Lane moved that* " It is the sense of ibis Society that oor Society should continue and improve its relation with the American Historical Associalion". Hi motion was seconded and approved.
A discussion ensued ahout the academic program for next year. It was moved, seconded, and approved to leave the planning of the program to the Advisory Council.
Ben Brown announced the acquisitiou by the University of Kansas of a microfilm collertion of the papers of Sidney Sennino.
The meeting was adjourncd at 5:55 pan..
