Si noti che l'esule fa il nome di Julie Schunk o Schunck, che Antonio Gal* lenga, aUas Luigi Mariotti, conobbe dopo il 4 ottobre 1846, quando si recò a Manchester per tenere delle conferenze su Dante, e sposò il 12 luglio 1847.1}
Non risulta che Mazzini conoscesse la famiglia Schunck prima del fidan­zamento di Julie con Gallenga. H primo accenno a possibili rapporti fra l'esule e Julie si riscontra in una lettera mazziniana del 29 marzo 1847, indirizzata ad Eliza Ashurst, destinata a morire nel '50, dopo mia mésalliance contratta a Parigi: 2> I will comply with your wish as Lo Miss Schunk.3) Alcuni giorni più tardi, il 13 aprile 1847, in una lettera alla stessa Eliza, Mazzini accennava ad un Mr. Schunk, cui aveva indirizzato un biglietto: Can you teli me il" Mr. Schunk has received a note of mine addressed mereìy to bis name? *' Doveva trattarsi del mercante anglo-tedesco Marlin Schunk, che aveva fondato a Manchester la ditta Schunck, Mylius Co. , divenuta in seguito Schunck, Souchay Co. , ovvero del figlio di Martin, il distinto chimico Henry Edward Schunck, che ebbe un ruolo importante nella vita intellettuale di Manchester.' Nello stesso aprile 1847, Mazzini, informato da Gallenga delle sue future nozze con Julie Schunck, scriveva ad Eliza Ashurst: Yes; a short lime before your last note, I had a note from Mariotti, telling me ali. May he make ber happy, and improve in herl Stili, the first movement was of fear. Mariotti has many sound, qualities; but there is more in him of the imagining powers, than of the feeling ones; but perhaps, these she will awake in him . )
Evidentemente Mazzini era scettico riguardo ai sentimenti di Gallenga, che ai suoi occhi aveva il torto di fare un matrimonio di convenienza. Non per nulla l'esule, alludendo alle future nozze, scriveva a Giuseppe Lamberti, in una lettera datata 21 aprile 1847: Mariotti, ossia Gallenga, dacché ripiglia il suo nome, è marito a una Inglese, giovine, gentile, che ha fin d'ora L. 500 annue, e ne avrà 1000 un giorno. Bravi tutti ! . " ) A nozze avvenute, il 1 settembre 1847, Mazzini informava Eleuterio Felice Foresti, che coprì degnamente la
