Si avverte in tale scritto la tensione dello spirito di Mazzini, sotto rincal­zare della guerra di Crimea, alla vigilia del secondo tentativo di Lunigiana. 2> Era il tempo, in cui il grande genovese poteva scrivere a Sophia Craufurd: ora, non respiro ebe azione, non sogno che azione .!l) In tale attesa feb­brile appaiono più evidenti che mai le caratteristiche fondamentali del pen­siero mazziniano: il nazionalismo armonizzato con l'europeismo,4' entrambi fondati sulla religione dell'Umanità.5) Destinatario della lettera citata sembra essere quello stesso Mr. Robinson, cui Mazzini inviò quest'altra missiva sul­l'argomento medesimo:
