Mr. Robinson aveva offerto a Mazzini del danaro, raccolto da Mrs. Rob­inson, per i patrioti imprigionati, con una lettera scritta il 4 agosto 1854, quando il grande repubblicano si trovava a Ginevra.2) Tornato a Londra al­l'inizio di novembre,3) Mazzini aveva trovato la missiva di Mr. Robinson, cui rispondeva con i dovuti ringraziamenti. L'esule non sapeva se la somma fosse ancora disponibile dopo tanto tempo. Comunque, alludendo alla guerra di Crimea, alla quale si opponeva decisamente,4) ricordava al suo destinata­rio che le vittime del despotismo russo non dovevano far dimenticare quelle del despotismo austrìaco e papale. Mazzini pregava Mr. Robinson d'indiriz­zare la sua risposta a Barden Park, presso Tonbridge o Tunbridge Wells nel Keni, in casa di Matilda Ashurst Biggs,8) di cui era ospite, oppure a Londra, Park Lodge, Parson's Green, Fulbam, presso Caroline Ashurst Stansfeld.6)
Il danaro destinato ai patrioti imprigionati venne regolarmente versato a Mazzini, come risulta da un'altra lettera dell'esule a Mr. Robinson.
Tuesday, [Decomber 1854] Dear Sir,
I bave received the money order for L. 5. I tbank you again; and especially for the very kind and earnest manner in which you give ibis offering. Do not fear any tbing for me, when I am on the Coniineni; some Uiing within me tells me tbat I must irritiate what bas been, ie, and will be the aim of my life, before I die. Next day, ali dangers may assai! me; Italy wiU bave then plenty of men ready to do what I do.
Keep the address you bave. Any letter that you may one day ;or other wish io forward, wQl always reach me, through tbat, wherèver I am.
I shall certainly remember your kind offer, ìf ever I come to Cambridge. For the preseat, I bave no chance of journeying in your direction.
