Non per nulla l'esule scrisse ad Emilie Ashurst. passata a seconde nozze con il patriota Carlo Venturi,8) a proposito di un eventuale incontro con Ruskin, in una lettera datata 16 aprile 1861: Munro ought lo be told to lead Ruskin gently to the convinction that he ia noi should we be pleased with one another to expect me to rush into bis arma ut Denmark place, eie. I bave so much work. dear, that I feci afraid of any new acquaintance even when its name is Ruskin .4) Sulla base di tale lettera, uno studioso americano ha affermato che Mazzini declined to meet Ruskin on the ground that he was too busy .s) In realtà rincontro ebbe luogo il 24 aprile 1861, presumibilmente per iniziativa di Munro, come risulta da una lettera di Mazzini a Ruskin:
