Il 25 gennaio 1972 si è spento a New York l'animatore degli studi del Risorgi­mento negli Stati Uniti e grande amico dell'Istituto Howard R. Marraro. La Rasse­gna ne .parlerà distesamente nel proesimo fascicolo. Per ora diamo l'annuncio apparso nel New York Times del 26 gennaio.
Dr. Howard R. Marraro, professor emeritus of Italian at Columbia University'* Sebo! of Cenerai Studies, died Tuesday night in his home at 600 West 116th Street, after a threemonth illness. He was 74 years old.
Dr. Marraro taught at Colombia from 1925 to 1965. Onring thut period and after his rctirement. he worked vigorously to strengthen- the cultural ties between the United States and Italy.
For his efforts, he reeeived in 1955 a meritorious servi ce award from the Italian Government. In 1966 he was awarded the rank of Grand Oflìcer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Rcpublic, the second highest honor the President of Italy can bestow on a civilian.
Dr. Marraro was the author of more than a dozen books on Italian literature, history, colture and relations with the United States. He also wrote many articles on ihese sobjects for Current History, the Politicai Science Quarterly, the Journal of Modem History and other publications.
In 1961, the United States Embassy in Rome and the Italian Ministry of Pnhlic Instrnction sponsored a series of lectnres by Dr, Marraro at 22 Italian universi ties and instiiiiles of higher learning.
Dr. Marraro was a Fnlbrigbt lecturer in Italy in 1952 and 1953.
In thls country, he served as educational adviser to the Insti tute of International Educali on from 1925 to 1932 and as educational adviser to the Italian Consolate General hexe from 1932 to 1940. Beginning in 1940, he served as examiner in Spanish and Italian for the Municipal Ci vii Service Commission.
Dr. Marraro, who was born in Regalhuto, Italy, received bachelors, master's and Ph.D. degrees from Colombia. In 1959 he was awarded an honorary degree in lettera from the University of Bologna.
He leaves his wife, Belen; a son, Dr. Howard W. Marraro of Norwood, N. J.; a a daughter, Mrs. Frederick Abdoo of Aradell, N. J.; three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Vacca-riello, Mrs. Lena Passalaq.ua, and Mrs. Vita Candela; a brother, Victor Marraro, and nine grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be offered at 10 a. m. tomorrow at the Roman Catholic Chnrch of Notre Dame, Morningside Drive and 114th Street .

PIACENZA. Il nostro Comitato di Piacenza ha annunciato nn convegno di studi dedicato a Giuseppe Mazzini, nel centenario della morte. La seduta che sarà organizzata in collaborazione con la sezione piacentina della Deputazione di storia patria per le province parmensi avrà luogo il 7 maggio e s'incentrerà, appunto, su alcune relazioni dedicate al pensiero di Mazzini ed all'influenza esercitata dallo stesso nella nostra provincia. Altri studi tratteranno invece altri argomenti, sempre di storia risorgimentale.
Nel corso della riunione svoltasi in Biblioteca sotto la presidenza del conte Giuseppe Salvatore Manfredi (ed alla quale erano presenti, col prof. Nasali! Rocca, il m.o Rallini, Serafino Maggi e i'aw. Sforza Foglino!), il Comitato piacentino ha anche deciso di presentare ufficialmente alla cittadinanza il volume di recente edito nella Biblioteca storica piacentina - - che raccoglie numerosi studi già esposti in con­vegni risorgimentali tenutisi nella nostra città.
