Presi tieni Shepard B. Clough a mio un e ed that Clara Lovett had snggested that our Society sponsor visiti ng professore from Italy for letture tours in Nortli America. He commented tbat our Society does not bave funds available for that purpose and ttrged interested niembers lo seek out sources of support for a good idea. He tbeo annonneed that he bad appointed Emiliana P. Noetber to be Acting Secretary-Txeasurer of the Society during the Spring Semestor, 1973, wben Norman Kogan will be on leave. He called for suggestiona of names of members who wilil be in Italy during the aca-demic jrears 1973-1974 who conld represent our Society at varions Congresses and Con-ferencee in, Italy. Presidenl Clough tben referrod to the Marraro prize becjuest and annonneed that one prize committee would be formed for ali tbree Societies wbicb had received bequests from the late Howard R. Marraro ; the Society for Italian Historicail Studies, the American Historh-al Association, and the American Catbolic Hìstorìcal Society. Tbis committee would also make our Society's traditi ori al award for a best uiipnblished manuscript to a young scholar beginning a career in history. He an­nonneed that tbe niembers of tbis committee would be Duane Koenig (Chai rinati), Eric Cochrane, Raymond Grew, and Doroty Koenigsberger. He announced tbat tbe Program Committee for next year's academic sessi on would consist of Edward Tannenbaum (Cbairman), Gordon Griffiths, and Ira Glazier. The members appointed to the Nomi. natine Committee ore Charles F. Delzell (Cbairman), Gene Brucker, and Alan Gassels.
President Clough then called on Raymond Grew, subslituting for Felix Gilbert, to report on the proposed conference for 1974 honoring tbe anxriversary of Muratori, Grew stated that tbe Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, New Jersey would be willma to host such a conference if there was evidence of enihusiasm and reasouable participation. Eric Cochrane spoke against the proposal nrgning that a Major Congress on Muratori and tbe 18th Century was held in Italy last year, the papere from wbicb were near to pnbliealiion. Grew asked for a show of hands among those present who thougfat they would go to such a meeting. Only four members responded affirmafcively.
President Clough then announced that René Albrecht-Garrié bad suggested tbat our Society sponsor a professional journal in Italian history. He was appoinling a committee composed of Emiliana P. Noetber and Edward Tannenbaum to look info the quetion, if the members agreed. The members endorsed investigating tbe question.
The Executive Secretary-Trcasnrer then made bis report. The Society has 184 members as of December 28, 1972, tbe largest membershìp in ite history. This is a net increase of fifteen members over 1971. Twenty-three new members joàned while eight members left. The iìrararfal accounts reveab as of December 28, 1972, n stim of 2,065.99 in the checking occount; 2,420.77 in the savings account; and a 5,000.00 saving certificate purebased with the money from tbe Marraro bequest. Tbe checking account figure includes recent receipts for subscriptions to Italian journals for 1973 and will soon sbrink as subscriptions are placed. Wc stili face the problem of alow and erratic delivery of jonrnals from Italy, primirily tbe coneequence of the breakdown of tbe Italian postai service.
Elisa Carriìlo, Cbairlady of the Prize Award Committee for 1972, announced that our Society** prize for a beat unpublished manuscript was unanimonsly awarded to CLrire LaVfgna for ber biography of Anna Kuliarioff: From Russian Populìsm to Italian Refbrmism . The prize money again was made ovilable from the America. Italy Society throngh the good office* of ita Executive Director, Hedy Giusti-Lanham. No citai ion was awarded io a senior scholar. She imdlcated tbree Jmiprovements for tbe future whieh ilio Commi! tee recommended: 1. More pabRoity about tbe prize ; 2. A clear defmition of a young annoiar; 3. Nomination by tlie members to tbe prize committee of senior scholars descrving tùia ti on for tbeir contribuì ioti* over a long career.
