Vita dell'Istituto
Il 1 dicembre 1976 è stata inaugurata una Mostra delle caricature e satire politiche in Italia dal 1848 all'Unità, cui è seguita, il 3, una tavola rotonda sull'argomento.
Il 14 febbraio 1977 ha avuto luogo un'altra tavola rotonda sul tema: or La Sinistra al potere nel 1876 ed i riflessi nel Viterbese .

SOCIETY FOR ITALIAN HISTORICAL STUDIES. - The annoiai meeting of the Society for Italian Historical Studies was called to order at 5:05 pan., December 29, 1976, in the Dover Room of the Sheraton-Park Hotel, Washington, D.C. About forty members present. President Edward R. Tarmenbaum read his report, describing the progress made by the Society during the past year, and stressing the cordial relations that exist between the Society and the American Historical Association. The Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Alan J. Reinerman, made his annual report. The Society ended 1976 with 210 members, the largest figure to date. Continuing efforts are being made to attract new members, includ-ing participation in the Exhibit-reception for affiliated societies organized by the American Historical Association on December 28, 1976. Of current members, 102 joined by paying dues, 89 by subscribing to an Italian journal, while nineteen voluntarly did both. There bave been fewer complaints from members about the arrivai of Italian journals, which seem at present to be appearing with reasonable regularity, though many are stili about a year behind schedule.
As members had requested, the Executive Secretary-Treasurer has contacted the American Historical Association concerning the location of future annual meetings, and learned that the 1977 meeting will be in Dallas, the 1978 meeting in San Francisco. In the future, the name of the chairman of the program committee for our annual meeting will be announced in the Newsletter of the previous year, so that ali members who wish to submit proposals for papers or sessions will have ampie time to do so.
David Herlihy, Chairman of the Prize Committee, then announced its awards. The citation to a senior scholar was awarded to Myron P. Gilmore. The Society's Helen and Howard R Marraro Prize for the best publication in Italian history was awarded to John F. Coverdale for his hook, Italioti Intervention in the Spanisk Civil War (Princeton University Press, 1975). The Society's prize for the beat unpublished manuscript by a younger scholar was divided between Victoria de Grazia for her dissertation, The Politics of Lei-sure: The Dopolavoro, and the Organization of Workers' Spare Time in Fascist Italy , and Kenneth J. Kirkland for his dissertation, The Italian Chamberà of Labor, 1890-1914 . Once again, the funds for this prize were provided by a gifi of the America-Italy Society through the good oifices of its Executive Director, Mrs. Hedy Giusti-Lanham.
The Chairman of the Nomìnating Committee, Roland Sarti, nominated James M. Powell to the Advisory Council. There were no nominations from the floor, and the nominee was elected unanimously.
Clara Lovett proposed that the Society approach the staff of the Italian Quarterly, with an offer to add this journal to its list if it is modified to include a greater proportion of articles on historical themes. The proposai was adopted.
