SOCIETY FOR ITALIAN HISTORICAL STUDIES. - Diamo il verbale della riunione annuale della Società statunitense. The Annual Meeting of the Society for Italian Historical Studies was called to order at 5:00 p.m. on December 29, 1977, in the Vaquero Boom of the Sheraton-Dallas Hotel in Dallas, Texas.
Fresident Edward R. Tannenbaum read bis report, describing the progress made by our Society during the past year and the good relations existing with the American Historical Association.
The Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Alan J. Reinerman, then made bis report. The Society ended 1977 with 225 members, the Iargest figure thus far. As part of our continuing eflbrt to atlract new members, the Society once a gain look part in the Exhibit-Reception for affiliated societies organized by the AHA on December 28, 1977. Of current members, 125 joined by paying dues, 78 by subscrihing to an Italian journal, and 21 voluntarily both paid dues and subscribed to a journal. Italian journals now seem to be appearing with greater regularity than in the past, though some are stili about a year behind schedule. The Executive Secretary explained the outcome of the discussions which he, according to the vote of the 1976 annual meeting, had carried on with the Editor of the Italian Quar-terZy, Spencer di Scala, as to the possibility of a closer link between that journal and the Society. An arrangement that seemed mutually satisfactory was indeed worked out; unfor-tunately, the Editor bas recently informed us that the Quarterly has had to suspend publi-cation for financial reasons, so that the arrangement cannot be implemented.
Felix Gilbert, Chairman of the Awards Committee, then annoimced ita decisions. The Society did not award its Marraro Prize for 1977, nor was a citation made to a senior scholar. The Society's Award for the best unpublished manuscript by a younger scholar was presented to Melissa Bullard for her dissertation, Filippo Strozzi: Favor and Finances under the Medici in Florence and Rome during tho Early Sixteenth Century . The Committee also wished to give Honorable Mention to John Marino for bis dissertation, The Works and Days of the Dogana of Foggia in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries . The text of Professor Gilbert's report follows these minutes.
The Chairman of the Nominating Committee, Claudio Segrè, nominated the present Vice-President, William Bowsky, as next President of the Society, Alan Cassels as the next Vice-Pxesident, and Roland Sarti to replace Elisa Carrillo whose term on the Council bas expired. There were no nominations from the floor, and the Committee's nominees were elected imanimously.
Duane Koenig brought to the attcntion of the Society a request from Emilia Morelli: foce the Istituto per la Storia del Risorgimento Italiano is searching for undiscovered lettera by Mazzini or Garibaldi, any member who may know of such lettera is asked to inform her.
The Business Meeting was adjoumed at 5:30 p.m. It was followed by the Social Hour, in the Alamo Room of the Sheraton-Dallas Hotel, unital 7:00 p.m. About forty-"ve members were present .
