SOCIETY FOR ITALIAN HISTORICAL STUDIES. - The Business Meeting of the Society was called to order at 5:00 pan. in the Calvert Room of the Sheraton Washington Hotel. About 35 members were present. President Alan Cassais described the current state of the Society and ita recent progress. The Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Alan J. Reiner-man. made his report. The Society ended 1980 wilh 265 members, the largest number to date. Of our current members, 161 joined by paying dues, 87 by subscrihing to an Italian journal, and 17 both paid dues and subscribed to a journal. Italian journals are, in general, reaching members with reasonable regularity, though many are up to a year behind schedule. The Journal of Italian History has announced that it will combine its 1980 issues with those for 1981, thus putting the journal back on schedule; subscribers for 1980 will receive the combined issues automatically.
As of December 21, 1980, the funds of the Society were as follows: N.O.W. Account (Checking-savings). 8340.25; Marraro Bequest (Timed certificate): 5224.41.
The Chairman of the Award and Citation Commi ttee, David Herlihy, next made his report. A Award for the Best Unpublished Man use ri pt by a Yo unger Scholar was given to Richard J. Wolff, St. John's University, for his dissertation, The Federazione Universitaria Cattolica Italiana: Catholic Students in Fascist Italy . The Citation to a Senior Scholar was presented to Max Salvadori.
Since Elisa Carrillo, Chairperson of the Marraro Prize Committee was unable to be present, its decision was announced by David Herlihy: the Marraro Prize went to Robert FinJay. for his Politics in Renaissance Venice (Rutgers University Press).
The Chairman of the Nominating Committee, Eric Cochrane, announced that the Committee nominated Melissa Ballard, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, to the Advisory Council. There were no nominations from the floor. and the nominee was elected unanimously.
Under the heading of Other Business , Borden W. Painter announced that a special issue of the Cesare Barbieri Courier had just appeared, dedicated lo Mussolini and Italian Fascism .
The Business Meeting was followed by the Social Hour, at 5:45 p.m. in the Woodley Room, which continued until 7 pan.
