ASSOCIATION FOR THE STUDY OF MODERN ITALY. - Siamo veramente lieti di annunciare la costituzione di una associazione britannica che si occuperà particolarmente di storia italiana. Essa si affianca a quella statunitense e ai nostri gruppi di studio stranieri. L'iniziativa è dovuta a Christopher Seton Watson, che i nostri soci conoscono non solo per i suoi fondamentali lavori sulla nostra storia, ma anche per la partecipazione attiva della quale ha onorato i nostri congressi.
Diamo il verbale della prima seduta, lieti che le autorità italiane abbiano fornito il loro appoggio all'iniziativa.
The inaugurai meeting of the Association was held at the Polytechnic of Central London on 20 November 1982. Over 60 persons attended, inchiding the Director of the Italian Institute, Professor Alessandro Vaciago, who also represented Ambassador Sergio Romano, Director-General of the Department of Cultural Relations in the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs; three representatives from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office; and a representative of the British-Italian Society. A message of greeting was received from the British Embassy in Rome.
The meeting was addressed hy Luigi Spaventa, Professor of Economics in the University of Rome and a member of the Italian Chambcr of Deputies. His theme was the gravity of the present economie situation of Italy and the ineffectiveness of the politicai system in dealing with it. His brilliant and lucid, though gloomy, analysis was greatly appreciated, as was shown hy the questiona and discussion which followed.
Newsletter No. 1, prepared hy John Davis and David Hi ne, was presented to the meeting.
A draft constitution of the Association was adopted, with minor amendments and additions.
The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Chairman, Christopher Seton-Watson, Oriel College, Oxford; Hon. Secretary, Paul Corner, University of Reading; Hon. Treasurer, John Pollard, Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology. In addition the following were elected to the Executive Committee: Clair Battaglino, Pembroke College, Oxford; John Davis, University of Warwick; Denise De Rome, Polytechnic of Central London; Paul Ginsborg, Churchill College, Cambridge; David Hine, University of New-castle-upon-Tyne; Judy Rawson, University of Warwick; David Soskice, University College, Oxford. John Davis and David Hine agreed to continue as joint editore of the Newsletter, which will appear three times a year.
Professor Spaventa, Professor Vaciago and Professor Filippo Donini, former director of the Italian Institute, were elected to honorary membership.
The Executive Committee met on 16 Decomber to review progress and pian future activities. John Pollard reported that membership had reached 73. The Committeee decided that the theme of the next annual conference should be the Fascist Regime in the 1930s, and ita date was tentatively fixed for Friday/Saturday 18/19 November 1983, the location to be London. The Committee also expressed the hope that it would be possible to arrange a number of regional onc-day conferences during the coming year.
