SOCIETY FOR 1TALIAN H1STORICAL STUDIES. Pubblichiamo qui il verbale della riunione annuale 1984 della Società inviatoci dal suo Executive Secretary, prof. Alan J. Reinerman: The Business Meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 29, 1984, in the Haymarket Room of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago.
The Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Alan f. Reinerman, gave his report. The Society ended 1984 with 309 members, the largest number to date. Of those members, 208 joined by paying dues, 87 by subscribing to a journal, whilc 14 both paid dues and subscribed. Most Italian journals now seem to be arriving with reasonable regularity, though often a year or so behincl schedule. The Secretary attended a meeting held by the AHA at 7:30 a.m. on December 29 for the oflìcers of affiliateci societies; what chiefly emerged was that the AHA now regards such societies far more favorably than a decade ago, having rcalized that thèy are a major source of strenglh for the profession. Various ideas for cooperation among these groups were discussed, but no concrete plans were made.
As of December 26, 1984, the Society's funds were as follows: N.O.W. Account: 3,478.55: Money Market Certificate (Marraro prize fund): 10.000.00.
The report of the Award and Citation Committee was read by its Chairperson. Domenico Sella. The Award for the Best Unpublished Manuscript by a Younger Scholar was given to Paul M. Howell. for his dissertation, Capitalism in the Risorgimento: fomt-Stock Banking and Economie Developmenl in the Kingdom of Sardinia, 1843-1859 . The Citation to a Senior Scholar was given to R. John Rath.
The report of the Marraro Prize Committee was read by its Chairperson, Emiliana P. Noether. The Society's Marraro Prize was awarded lo David 1. Kertzer for his Family Life in Central Italy. 1880-1910: Sitarecropping, Wage Labor, and Coresidence. (Rutgers University Press).
The report of the Nominating Committee was given by its Chairperson, Alan Cassels. The Committee nominated Peter Kent to fili the vacancy on the CounciI left by the expira-tìon of Victoria De Grazia' terni. The nominee was elected unanimously.
Two other items of business were discussed. First, it was decided to expand our Award for the Best Unpubblished Manuscript to include those scholars who are over thirly-fìve, but who received the Ph. D. after that dote due to unusual circumstances; Domenico Sella ts to draw up an appropriate change in the rules for the award. Second, since 1985 marks the thirtieth anniversary of our Society's founding, it was resolved to commemorate this anniversary by presenting more than our usuai program of sessions and meelings at the 1985 annual meeting.
