The Business Meeting was called to order ai 5 pm on Sunday, December 29, 1985, in the Hart Room of the Marriott Marquis Hotel, New York. Some thirty members were present. The President, Emiliana P. Noether, was ili and so unable to attend the meeting, but sent her best wishes. Norman Kogan presided in her place.
The Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Alan J. Reinerman, gave his report. The Society ended 1985 with some 325 members, the largest number to date. Of those members, 218 joined by paying dues, 98 by subscribing to an Italian journal, and nine both paid dues and subscribed. Most Italian journals seem to be arriving with reasonable regularity, though often a year or two behind schedule. As of December 23, 1985, the Society's fìnancial situations was as follows: N.O.W. Account: 3,465.45; Money Market Certificate (Marraro Prize fund): 10,000.00.
The report of the Award and Citation Committee was read by Marion Miller, since its chair, John P. Donnelly, was not able to attend. The "Award for the Best Unpublished Manuscript" was given to Brian R. Sullivan for his dissertation, "A Thirst for Glory: Mussolini, the Italian Military, and the Fascisi Regime, 1922-1936". The Citation to a Senior Scholar was conferred upon Charles F. Delzell.
The report of the Nominating Committee was read by its Chair, Alexander DeGrand. Raymond Grew was nominated vice-president, Paul Grendler was nominated to the post on the Council left by the expiration of Melissa Bullard's term, and the current vice-president, Domenico Sella, was nominated to succeed Emiliana P. Noether as President. Ali nominees were approved unanimously.
The report of the Marraro Prize Committee was read by Alan J. Reinerman, since Elisa Carrillo was unable to attend. The Prize was given to Lewis Lockwood for his Music in Renaissance Ferrara, 1400-1515 (Harvard, 1984).
The meeting concluded with a commemoration of two members whose recent and sudden deaths left the profession in general and our lìeld in particular the poorer: Eric Cochrane, to whom David Herlihy paid tribute, and Edward Tannenbaum, of whose contributions we were reminded by Norman Kogan.
The Society's joint academic session with the American Historical Association was held on December 29, 1985, at 2:30 pm: Popular Counter-Revolutionary Movetnents in Risorgimento Italy.
