SOCIETY FOR ITALIAN H1STORICAL STUDIES. Diamo il verbale della seduta annuale della Società.
The Business Meeting was called to order at 5 p.m. on December 29, 1988, in the Woiverine B Room of the Hyatt Regency Cincinnati. Some twenty-five members were present.
President Raymond Grew in his report brought up the question of financial support for historians who wish to do research in Italy, pointed out that less support seems to be available for it than for other European countries, and suggested that the subject be discussed under the heading of Other Business.
The Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Alan J. Reinerman, gave his report. The Society ended 1988 with its largest membership to date, some 340 members. He reported on the meeting of the AHA Committee on Affiliated Societies which he had attended on December 28, 1988: various proposals for closer cooperation between the AHA and its affiliated societies had been discussed, including an expanded role for the latter in the annua! meeting and greater coverage in the AHA Perspectives, but the more encouraging aspect of the meeting was the AHA's clear recognition of the value of the affiliated societies and its wish for closer cooperation with them.
As of December 21, 1988, the Society's financial situation was as follows:
N.O.W. Account: 3180.70
Money Market Certificate: 10,000
(Marraro Prize Fund)
The report of the Award and Citation Committee was read by Alan J. Reinerman, since Anthony Molho was in Italy. The Award for the Best Unpublished Manuscript was given to Philip R. Gavitt, for his dissertation Charity and Children in Renaissance Florence: The Ospedale degli Innocenti, 1401-1536 . The Citation to a Senior Scholar was awarded to Charles Trinkaus; its text follows the Minutes.
Since no member of the Marraro Prize Committee was present, the award was announced by Alan J. Reinerman; it went to Claudio G. Segré, for his Italo Balbo: A Fascisi Life (University of California, 1987).
The Nominating Committee, chaired by Philip V. Cannistraro, nominated James Burgwyn to the vacant place on the Council; its report was unanimously approved.
Two topics were discussed under Other Business . The question of financial support for study in Italy, raised by Raymond Grew, was discussed at lenght; ali agreed as to the need to find additional funds, especially for graduate students, and it was decided to explore foundations and various other possible sources of support, though there was considerable pessimism as to the chances of success. Emiliana P. Noc-ther brought up the question of sponsoring a journal devoted to ltalian history, pointing out that desktop publishing had eroded the financial arguments against such a venture; perhaps joint sponsorship by SIHS, CONGRiIP, and the Columbia Seminar might make it feasible. No conclusion was reached, except that the subject warranted Turther consideration.
The Business Meeting was dissolved at 5:55 p.m. The Social Hour followed, in the Bluegrass B Room, until 7 p.m.
