let stand that à verser dans le mains de L[edru]-R [ollin] K[ossuth] et M [azzini] but not in signatures, not in facsimiles but in ordinary engraving and add the signature of the issuer below, that there be somebody to acccount to the public opinion about the management and the result if you can do it so, let it be donej
if not I can not appear before the French public for the first Urne in my life in the quality of begging one frane. That would be a mistake on my part, as it will be on yours and Ledru-Rollins; will ruin every influence, open the gate to many attacks, and harm without any profit. It would be better to drop the whole raatter. Let me be informed about the standing of Mr. L[edru]-R [ollin] in the public opinion of the French people show me the real position of our common cause in France, when I see that there is indeed a serious organisation, a reality in a word, I will feel highly glad to be united with Mr. L[edru]-R[ollin] provided that he will accept my conditions (which will be very reasonable ones) as I allso will accept his. Then there is no need to do anything to get the party into any habit but I will avow publicly the honor of our association; and we can start financial and whatever other steps in an appropriate way upon mutuai agreement; but till that is not done, your must not appear to be in a position in which you know best that ! am not . That is a motive which can not be contradicted for requesting you to leave out my signature, if you can't arrange the matter thus as 1 told you above. And remember my dear friend, that financiary malters are never small , chiefly not with us, had you realised effectively your 10 million lires ioan, or I my 1 Va million of dollars we were now fighting, but without money nothing can be done. Besides, that matter is not only financial. You know it very well, and I am not willing to loose any advantage in America (where men have no faith to any sudden movement in Europe in general, and in France especially)
' by nominai alliances, without previously knowing that I will have ont of that alliance at least an equivalent advantage; and if so then let it be no nominai alliance but a real one.
I thank you for the ring the names list l will keep for you. Yours affectionately L. KOSSUTH
