Per la propaganda colà della Società per gli Amici d'Italia, aveva informato il suo amico Edward A. Hopkins dell'arrivo a New York del patriota livornese, cui affidava la lettera seguente:
Dear Sir,
Your last words were an offer: ili was frankly espressed and frankly accepted. And availing myself, I give these few words for you to my friend Adriano Lemmi, the secretary of Kossuth. Besides what he will nave to do for Mm, he has from me a special commission both moral and financiary for our Na­tional Italian Cause- He is entrusted too with an Address to the Ameri cans for the English Society of the Friends of Italy: and he will be, within a few days, entrusted with one from our National Oommittee, both for the Press.
I want to see the sympathies for Italy in the United States embodied in some systematic progressive manifestation; and an Assoeiation wouid seem to be the most naturai means of real-ization. We are approaching a supreme crisis; and we want, from ali these whe are really devoted to the cause of freedom throughout the worid, something more than words and baiTen sympathies.
I feel confident that you will do ali that is in your power to promote our objects and to help Lemmi to the fulfillment of nis mission.
