Dealing the lives of various Italian leaders in duferent chapters the author discussed their works and sacrìficcs for the country. The chapter on Alfieri dealt with the importance of his tragic dramas which had lasting effect on the hearts of the Italians. It also described the injustice and sufferings which a country had tó undergo to achieve independence.41) Daniele Manin was successful in sowing the seeds o independence.42) Similarly, Gioberti's book Primato was successful in awakening the Italians from their deep slumber.43) Besides dealing with the life of Cavour, his contribution to the various stages of Italian Unification was evaluated. The author praised the diplomacy of Cavour and hailed him as the greatest diplomat of that time. The author also praised the wisdorn of Victor Emmanuel and traced his efforts in the freedom struggle of Italy .H)
Bìographies of Italian Nationalists in Marathi Literature
In the last quarter of the nineteenth century biographies in Marathi language multiplied at a much faster rate than even before.45) In fact, biographical literature in Marathi became prolific in the twentieth century as compared to nineteenth century.46* For the propagation of revolutionary spirit among the Marathi knowing people, Joseph Mazzini was selected as a model for writing his biographies. The first biography of Mazzini in Marathi language was written by L. G. Ghanekar and was published47) in Baroda in 1899. The year 1906, when terrorism was a rising tide, provided an occasion to commemorate the centenary of Mazzini's birth. Accordingly a Marathi translation of his biography was published from Poona in Abhinav Bharat Mala. The great Indian revolutionary V.D. Savarkar wrote its preface which was in the form of biographical note.
