Italy and Freedom movement in India 531
The book was greatly loved and adored for the firing introductìon expounding the great mission of the great Italian patriot. The fiery propaganda and burning patriotism ran through out the twenty six pages of the introductìon.483 In the introductìon Savarkar wrote that the human revolution and politicai revolution are interlinked. The fundamental principles of politics are eternai and it is the duty of human race to use the past experiences of mankind for the reconstruction of the future pian and the hlstory.49) Savarkar, through Mazzini's biography endeavoured to teach ultimate truths and basic principles of politics to his countrymen.501 There is no death of the nation and the God loves those who employ ali conceivable weapons for the upliftment of the nation. Ali troubles, from agony to death, should be borne in the spirit of the duty at the aitar of the nation.51) Love of the nation, Mazzini taught, brings man closer to God. He exhorted, Leave your family, love your country, young man, love human race .52) The independence of one must be the independence of ali. If we become independent, we must bring independence to others also . J Mazzini's lite and politicai essays, Savarkar told, must be read by ali young men of the country. Mazzini's utterances read like universal truths meant for the mankind, and it was for us, wrote Savarkar, to make use of them for our good.54* The purpose of the book, explained Savarkar, was to bring out politicai opinions of the great man (Mazzini) which would direct the path of Indians.55*
This book created a furore in Maharashtra, nay, in the whole of India. Barrister Asaf Ali has recorded that Mazzini's life and teachings hourly fed the flame of his (Savarkar's) soul and seem to inspire his activity in the minutest details. V. D. Savarkar was under the speli of Mazzini's personality and wanted to inspire his compatriots who were groaning under the humiliation and torture of subjugation. He wanted to teach his countrymen the patriotism and sacrifices of Mazzini and also his mode of guerrilla warfare.57*
