Italy and Vreedom movernent in India 333
What was considered to be more seditious was not the translation o Mazzini's biography but the preface that the book contained. There is a discrepancy also in the number of the pages of the preface. According to Exhibit number 332 the preface of the book was of 32 pages, whereas ali other sources indicate that the preface was of 26 pages.65* This number appears to be correct as the second edition of the book published in 1946 contained the preface of 26 pages . The impact of Savarkar's hook on Marathi youths is also evident from the arrest of a young man 21 years age Dhanappa Shridharappa Valve on 29 August 1909 on the charge of taking active part in politicai matters and for advising people to read Savarkar's Mazzini.67*
This was not the only writing of V. D. Savarkar which was biographical and nationalist at the same time. An article with the heading Prafulla was recovered on searching his brother's (G. D. Savarkar) house. This article was sent by V. D. Savarkar to his brother for publication in the Marathi journal Vande Matram. In this article V. D. Savarkar wrote:
Si
How wili Garibaldi or Bismarck be able to convince me that my people pressed down by oppression for many years will be able to practice the high self-restraint of Mazzini... if joining together means breaking up then... and Mazzini were anarchists too .68)
It is quite evident from this that biographies of Italian leaders were sought to inspire the people with militant nationalism.
The biography of Garibaldi in Marathi was published in 1902 from Poona. It was written by Narasimha Chintaman Kelkar.69* The book ran for five editions and the 'last one was published in 1944. The appendix of the book is very interesting for it contained shapath (oath), the pledges of Mazzini's Young Italy which appears to have been adopted by the Indian nationalists. The book also dealt with the controversy amongst Cavour, Garibaldi and Mazzini. Kelkar had called Cavour as must sodi (statesman) and Mazzini as Mahatma (the great soul).70)
Another biography of Mazzini in Marathi, Joseph Mazzini - Italy cha ]anak, was written by Sadasiv Atmaram Jogelkar and was published7,) from
