Poona in 1923. Next year the same author published in Marathi the translation of Mazzini's Duties of Man entided Mattavi Kartavya.11' The preface to Jogelkar's Mazzini was written b N. C, Kelkar and that of Manavi Kartavya by Narayan Damodar Savarkar.73) Savarkar in the preface emphasised the intellectual and spiritual aspects of Mazzini's ideas, whom he called as Mabarishi (the great Saint), his activities, his universal fraternity and the liberty as gift of God.
A biography of Cavour, Cavour Urpb ìtaly ka Ramdas (Cavour alias Ramdas of Italy), was written by Mundale Vasudev Damodar (1880-1948) and published in 1925 from Poona.74> It is rather very interesting to note that while Mundale called Cavour as Ramdas, Tilak called Mazzini as Ramdas. Cavour had been halled as a great statesman and for his sacrifices and the love for his country.
Biography of Italian Nationalists in Tamil Literature
The f erti lifting efEect of Italian Risorgimento could also be seen in Tamil Literature. The first book on Italian Risorgimento in Tamil language, ltalyumpati by Rajgopala Cari Cekravarti, was published75) in 1879. There-after, there appeared several biographies of Mazzini, the last was published in 1950. These included Mazzini Caritramum Manitar Katamaikalum (Life of Mazzini and His Essays on Duties of Man) by M. R. Jambunathan7< in 1931, Valkkai Varalaru's Life of Mazzini in 1941, V. Svaminath Sarma's Mazzini elutiya Manitan Katmai in 1941,771 and Mazzini-yin-Manimolìkal (Sayings of Mazzini) by V. Svaminath Sarma in 1950.78)
The extempore melodies of the nationalist poet, Bharati, which tells of Mazzini's passion and Garibaldi's prowess have inspired in young India. His soul-stirring songs were expressions of the then new born emotions and passion for freedom inspired by Western ideas and advanced modem ideals, and they had helped to translate patriotism from the sphere of passion into that of religion .79) His works are replete with references
