A copy of your letter addressed to Hindu on the present unrest in India, has been placed in my hands by a friend. [...] It is the intention of my friend at his own expense, to have 20.000 copies printed and distributed and to have it translated also. We have, however not been able to secure the originai, and we do not feel justifled in processing it, unless we are sure of the accuracy of the copy and of the fact that it is your letter.55) La lettera a cui si riferisce Gandhi era stata scritta da Tolstoj nel 1908 in risposta ad una missiva dell'allora redattore del giornale Free Hindustan Taracuata Daas, un sostenitore della rivolta violenta contro il regime di occupazione inglese in India, tanto che il motto del giornale era: Wesistance to aggression is not sìmply justijìable, but imperative; non resistane burts botò Altruism and Egoism. La lettera di Tolstoj, interamente improntata alla difesa della non-resistenza, ebbe vasta eco anche in Russia, e venne pubblicata da diversi quotidiani, in varie città dell'impero. Le Kievskie Vesti avevano accompagnato il testo con un commento in cui si sottolineava che noi, e senza dubbio la maggior parte dei nostri lettori [...] non siamo d'accordo con alcune delle idee del grande scrittore, ma ci è cara ogni singola riga da lui scritta [...] anche se erronea.56)
Tolstoj rimase molto toccato dalla lettera di Gandhi, come annotò nel proprio diario il 26 settembre, e già il 7 ottobre spedì la risposta, confer­mando di essere l'autore dello scritto, che fu quindi stampato e diffuso, dopo essere stato tradotto in un dialetto indù.57)
Tornato a Johannesburg, Gandhi inviò a Tolstoj una copia del suo In­dia Home Rit/e, per chiedergli un parere. La risposta di Tolstoj è del 25 aprile 1910: I read your book with great interest because I think the question you treat in it the passive resistance is a question of the greatest importance, not only for the India but for the whole humanity. [...] I arri not quite well at present and therefore abstain from writing to you ali what I have to say about your book and ali your work, which I appreciafe very much, but I will do it as soon as I will feel better-,5?)
